CAT branching (simplified)
Each answer updates the estimate of your ability. Correct answers tend to raise item difficulty; incorrect answers lower it. When the engine reaches 95% confidence that you are above or below the passing standard, the exam ends.
Six NGN item types
Which NGN item type will you see most?
How many questions is the NCLEX-RN?
NCLEX-RN uses Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) with a minimum of 85 and a maximum of 150 scored items. The algorithm stops when it is 95% confident you are above or below the passing standard.
What happens if I get 85 questions?
If your exam ends at 85 questions, the CAT had enough evidence to classify you as pass or fail. A short exam is not inherently good or bad — it reflects statistical confidence, not luck.
What are the 6 NGN question types?
Next Generation NCLEX adds Extended Multiple Response, Drop-Down Cloze, Drag-and-Drop, Matrix Grid, Trend (Bow-Tie), and Extended Drag-and-Drop — all designed to measure clinical judgment, not recall alone.
How long do I have for NCLEX-RN?
You have up to 5 hours for the RN exam, including optional breaks. Many candidates finish in 2–3 hours.
What is the passing standard for NCLEX-RN?
Passing uses the Next Generation NCLEX Passing Standard set by NCSBN. It reflects the ability of a minimally competent novice nurse — not a percentage correct.
How soon do I get NCLEX-RN results?
Quick Results may be available in about 48 hours via Pearson VUE in the US (fee applies). Official results from your nursing regulatory body typically follow within roughly six weeks.
Can I retake NCLEX-RN if I fail?
Yes. NCSBN requires a minimum 45-day wait between attempts, with a limit of eight attempts per year (confirm local board rules).
What is the NGN and how is it different?
NGN launched April 2023. It layers six new item types onto CAT and aligns with the NCJMM clinical judgment model — testing decisions under uncertainty, not isolated facts.
